A Formal Distinction

Any distinction by form, which can be virtual (e.g., rationality vs. animality in humans) or real (e.g., the form of this chair is distinct from the form of this tree). Formal distinctions are closely connected conceptually to substantial distinctions, being that the latter bears the former.
